Bio

Stephen D. Loyd, M.D. is the Medical Director at Journey Pure at the River in Murfreesboro, Tennessee. He is also an Associate Professor of the Department of Medicine

James H. Quillen College of Medicine, East Tennessee State University. Stephen serves as an Expert Witness to many federal and state agencies. From May 2017-February 2018, he was the Assistant Commissioner for Substance Abuse Services in the Tennessee Department of Mental Health and Substance Abuse– the state of Tennessee’s “drug czar.” A charismatic speaker, Stephen has a lot to say about stigma and shame, and the need for prevention and treatment. He is a hero to many, and as a former patient stated recently at an event in Johnson City, Tennessee, “Dr. Steve saved my life and the lives of so many others.” Using the Bible as inspiration, in particular, the phrase “70 X 7,” Stephen has been able to move a rural community to open a treatment center, despite not-in-my-backyard concerns. He has served on many academic boards and committees and is a distinguished recipient of many honors and awards, but Stephen is most proud of his 14 years of recovery for opioid-use disorder.
